| The term “antibiotic” is known almost to all of us. When we have a bacterial infection we take antibiotic drugs to treat the illness. So do you understand what antibiotics represent? They're chemicals obtained from microbes and applied to kill bacteria or to slow their reproduction.
The first antibiotic, Penicillin, in 1928 by Alexander Fleming, and its creation commemorated a new stage in the history of medicine. Except for penicillin-based antibiotic products there is a list of other antibiotic products produced by different species of bacteria. All the antibiotic medications are different in action and are used for various purposes. That's why you should never try to select an antibiotic medical product by yourself. It's physicians' prerogative, do not interfere in their field. You should also take into consideration that antibiotic medications are efficient only against bacterial infections, but not virus ones.
Antibiotics are very strong medications so they should be taken only according to the doctor's prescription. If a certain antibiotic product was prescribed to your friend and helped him it does not mean that it'll be effective for you. It's most possible that it will not bring positive results, it may even harm. Antibiotics have rather serious side-effects, that's the reason why you should follow the recommendations of your physician on account of the type of antibiotic drugs and the duration of their application.
Although it's hard to overestimate the value of antibiotic products in the modern medicine you should understand that they're still medical products and have a number of side effects. Be ready to face such problems as diarrhea and vomiting.
Do not forget to inform your physician about allergies you have or used to have since some antibiotic drugs may provoke allergic reaction like skin rash, itching or face swelling. If the application of the antibiotic medication evokes unusual reaction, stop its application and consult your doctor as soon as possible.
