| Two types of erectile dysfunction are distinguished. Rare as it is, primary impotence means that a man has never had an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Secondary ED, a commoner loss of erectile ability after a normal function, normally develops gradually unless triggered by an injury or sudden medical condition. Psychological problems were once supposed to result in impotence. But we now know that conditions such as stress, depression and fear of poor performance in bed are at the root of only 10% - 20% of ED. It is most often triggered by physical factors, for example blood vessel disorders, nerve damage, penile abnormalities. ED can also be an adverse reaction to certain prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines.
However, whatever the causes are, males who experience ED are normally concerned and feel guilty and powerless.
There are only three oral therapies approved by the U.S. FDA to treat ED: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The drugs relax the walls of the penis allowing more blood to flow to the organ, so that when a man is sexually stimulated, he can attain an erection.
Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra work by a similar mechanism to result in erections. There are some differences in how long and how quickly the drug takes effect. Levitra works a bit longer than Viagra. They both take effect in about thirty minutes. With Levitra, the effects last for about 5 hours, whereas the effects of Viagra for 4 hours. Cialis works a bit faster (within about 15 minutes), and the effects last far longer - up to 36 hours in some cases.
Though each medication has proven efficacious, none is cure-all. Moreover they can cause health problems if interact with other medications. Note that drug-to-drug interactions with nitrates or nitroglycerin heart medicines can result in a serious decrease in blood pressure, which can be lethal. More general side effects, such as bad headaches and - in case of Viagra - blurred vision can be observed.
Along with drug therapies, there are other methods, such as vacuum therapy, penile injections, urethral pellets and penile implants for severe cases of erectile dysfunction. The kind of treatment, thus, is dependent on the severity of ED. |
